About the Event

This Hanukkah, families are invited to create their own original menorah to enter into the CCJCC Family Menorah Competition. Contestants will join via ZOOM and exhibit their creation to our panel of judges. The winning prize is a Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue & Neon Red Joy-Con. If a family is affiliated with a Jewish organization, synagogue or youth group, that organization will receive a bonus prize of $200.

Photos of all of the menorahs will be displayed online at ccjcc.org and underonetent.org with the winner highlighted and publicized in the "J, Jewish News Weekly." So, please email them to underonetent@ccjcc.org

Rules: Build a Menorah from Junk You Have Accumulated at Home

We all have been stuck at home for months and have made the best of it.  Now let’s make the best menorah out of household items (including food) that we have accumulated. This contest will give you the chance to look at everyday items with new eyes and create something meaningful and beautiful.  It is permissible to purchase something to complete your project, such as glue, thumb tacks, etc.  However, most of the materials you use must be household or food items you already have on hand.

Your menorah will be judged on the following criteria: whole family involvement, originality, innovation, creativity and environmental sustainability.

To enter the contest, register here as a family. Open to all ages. Please note: Once you register you will receive a confirmation email with more details on the day of the contest. An hour before the event begins, you will receive a reminder email that will have the Zoom link to join. If you don't see these emails, please check your spam folder to retrieve them. We suggest adding "notifications@wixevents.com" to your contacts.

Attendance is a must. If you prepared your menorah in advance, but it has been eaten since then, perished or broke apart, then a photo must be shown to the judges. You can either screen share it yourself (with an actual photo or device) or allow us to do so.

After all of the contestants have shown their creations to the judges (Rabbi Grenninger of Temple Isaiah, Rabbi Chabon of Cong. Bnai TIkvah and Rabbi Goldblatt of Beth Chaim Cong.), the judges will meet separately to compare their scores. During this 10-15 minute period, Nathaniel the Magician will perform magic tricks for all of us! He has received excellent reviews for his virtual performances and are delighted that he can join us. We will make arrangements off-line to get the prize to the winner.

Participating synagogues & organizations: American—Israeli Council, Beth Chaim Cong., Chabad of Contra Costa, Cong. Beth Emek, Cong. B’nai Shalom, Cong. B’nai Tikvah, Contra Costa Jewish Day School, CC Midrasha, Temple Isaiah.
