One of our favorite films of the 2020 EBIJFF was The Tobacconist, a coming-of-age drama in which a naive young man from a small rural town is changed forever after he moves to Vienna in 1938 to learn a trade from a tobacconist. Soon, he will befriend Sigmund Freud, fall in love, confront anti-Semitism, and most importantly, refuse to be a bystander. A beautifully moving film graced by stirring performances.

Viewer Discretion Advised: Adult content, nudity and sexual scenes.

Sponsors: EBIJFF in partnership with the Contra Costa JCC, Cong. B’nai Shalom, Cong. Beth Emek and Cong. B’nai Tikvah.

Due to Covid-19, the March 15 screening at Vine Cinema in Livermore was cancelled. Now, we are offering a free online streaming of this movie which will be available beginning noon July 21 through noon July 24.

To see the film, click here to RSVP and sign up by July 23 the latest. You will be receiving a confirmation email with a link and password that will be valid only during the free streaming window.

Note: One week later on Thursday, July 30 at 7:00 PM, award-winning author and historian Fred Rosenbaum will “dig deeper” into the history and contemporary society of the Austrian Jewish community. Information on how to join us by ZOOM will be listed on our website.
