The 1960 blockbuster Exodus, helmed by Otto Preminger, follows Paul Newman, aka Ari Ben Canaan, as he succeeds in getting the ship Exodus to sail from Cyprus to British-controlled Palestine with thousands of Holocaust survivors onboard. The Exodus was a real ship which did head for Palestine in July 1947 with over 4,500 passengers. But the true story–the ship sailed from a small port in France, Eva Marie Saint’s character was not on the ship and the Haganah leader’s name was not Ben Canaan–is much more heroic. In addition, many of the volunteers were Americans and one volunteer was a Christian minister!
During this virtual class, we will explore the British policy on Palestine prior to Israeli independence and the hundreds of “illegal” ships run by the Haganah and Irgun.
